II Memorial Fountain
Washington D.C.
Situated in the heart of the Mall in our nation’s
capital, the World War II Memorial is a graceful monument in the
neoclassic style commemorating the bravery of the service men and
women who lost their lives on the battlefields in Europe.
The memorial includes a large oval fountain known as the Rainbow
Pool which has 110 nozzles that spray water into the air. Mesiti-Miller
Engineering was called upon by the designers of the fountain to
address the structural support issues for the complex underground
piping which consists of hundreds of feet of piping from 2 inches
to 30 inches in diameter. One of the requirements was that the pipes
supports had to withstand thermal expansion and contraction. The
Mesiti-Miller engineering team accomplished this challenging task
within a very short timeframe—6 to 8 weeks—and worked
within constraints that could not be changed. All of the structural
work was done inside of an existing tunnel.
This impressive fountain, which is active day and night, complements
the stirring tribute to our veterans. Mesiti-Miller Engineering
is grateful for the opportunity assist with this project.
